Mario Zagallo is “out of danger” according to a hospital spokesman in Rio de Janeiro.

Zagallo has been admitted to hospital at the weekend suffering from a suspected heart murmur. Doctors put the illness down to stress related to Brazil’s round-trip to Japan last week for a friendly international.

Zagallo, 71, had been invited to manage the side on a one-off basis after the resignation of Luis Felipe Scolari following the World Cup win in Yokohama.

A hospital spokesman said: “Zagallo is recovering well, he is out of danger and resting. He will stay in hospital a few more days just as a precaution.”
