Former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder Boudewijn Zenden is training with Sunderland although the club have played down reports that they are interested in signing him.

Zenden, 33, is available as a free agent following his departure from Marseille at the end of last season.

“Sunderland would like short term to strengthen the midfield and Boudewijn is a serious candidate,” Zenden senior told Voetbal International. “In the past months he has been very strict with himself and has worked six days per week to keep in shape.

“Sunderland know who he is and what he can do so he has no need to prove himself. They want to see him doing it and it just depends on medical tests.”

However, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, played down talks of a deal, telling the club’s official website: “Bolo has joined us for a while and will train at the academy for a few weeks as he looks for a new club. He clearly has a first-class pedigree as a player so it’s great to have him here.”
