Zinedine Zidane has told Real Madrid to pull out all the stops to try and sign Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga champions have repeatedly insisted the French international is not for sale but that has not helped to dampen speculation about his future.
Zidane would like his compatriot to follow in his footsteps and join Real when the transfer window reopens.
Zidane, who could become a special adviser to Real chairman candidate Florentino Perez, believes Ribery would greatly improve the team.
“I hope he will want to come to Real Madrid,” Zidane told Canal+.
“It is better to have such a player in your team. If he gets an agreement to leave, he may want to play in Spain.
“Everything has to be done for him to sign at Madrid. The aim is to regain prestige for the club. His signature could help.”
