Ajax have beaten off a challenge from Fulham to sign Vitesse Arnhem’s highly-rated Dutchman Victor Sikora.

The 23-year-old had been expected to join the west London club last week, but the deal collapsed over Fulham’s preference to pay the fee in four instalments. Vitesse, who are rumoured to be close to bankruptcy were unhappy with the arrangement and decided to accept Ajax’s one-off paymment of £2.9 million.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Sikora confirmedthat Ajax was always his preferred destination.

“Until something is signed, you have to be prepared for anything,’ the striker admitted.

“Luckily everything has fallen into place, because Ajax has always been my first choice. Now I’m at the club where I want to be.”
