Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta is hoping injuries within the Spain camp might give him a chance to earn a place in Spain’s World Cup squad.

The 28-year-old has never represented his country, but this season, following a lengthy injury layoff, he has made an impressive return to full fitness.

“It would be amazing for me if I had the chance to be named in the squad,” he said.

“I am working hard, trying to get the attention of the manager. I am always hopeful.

“Spain have a couple of injuries with Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta.”
