Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni has closed the door on a possible international comeback for 35-year-old striker Roberto Baggio, saying he has to plan for the future.

Injuries to strikers Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti gave Baggio hope that he might be included in Trapattonis squad for next week’s friendly international against Portugal.

Baggio has been in impressive form recently for Brescia this season, prompting calls for him to return to the national side.

However, Trapattoni has ignored the claims of he veteran striker.

“I have to think to the future,” Trapattoni told reporters.

“It seems to be a personal question between him and me, but it isn’t. Remember that it was I who brought him to Juventus.

“But now the situation is different. If I were Baggio, I’d say: ‘Thanks for the attention, but what’s the point?'”

Baggio scored 27 goals in 55 matches for the national team and last played for Italy in 1999.
