Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon have released a joint statement denying that Brazilian striker Mario Jardel will be joining the Catalan club.

The clubs made their announcement in an attempt to quell recent press speculation linking the prolific marksman with a move to the Nou Camp.

A statement on Barca’s official site read: “Within the framework of the clubs’ historically excellent relations, Miguel Ribeiro Teles and Joan Gaspart, Presidents of Sporting Lisbon and F.C.Barcelona, and a number of their respective executives, have held a number of meetings with the aim of analysing possible dealings between the clubs.

‘As a result of these contacts, there has been a considerable amount of press speculation concerning possible transfers involving players such as Mario Jardel and various members of the Barca squad.

“In order to avoid any possible misinterpretations, both clubs would like to make it clear that no such deals are under consideration for the near future.”
