England striker, James Beattie, has denied claims that he is just a warm up act for Wayne Rooney.

Beattie, Who is the leading English goal scorer in the Premier League with 17 goals, looks set to play in the first half of tomorrow’s friendly international against Australia at Upton Park.

Beattie insisted: “Wayne’s been getting a lot of attention and if I’m out of the spotlight it doesn’t bother me at all.

“There are no doubts about his talent it’s scary. Some people are naturally talented and he’s definitely one of them. It’s a gift and I wish I’d been as good when I was 17.

“I have always been confident in my own ability. I go out believing I’m going to score and nobody is going to stop me.

“I’m focused and mentally strong and that’s a good weapon to have.”
