Celtic have confirmed they are interested in signing unsettled Real Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen.

Gravesen has been told he is surplus to requirements at El Santiago Bernabeu, and the Dane’s representative John Sivebaek claimed Celtic were one of several clubs interested in signing the player.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell admitted the club were considering a move for Gravesen.

“There is nothing more I can say other than what Sivabaek has told has already told you,” Lawwell told the Daily Record.

“The guy likes Celtic but that is not to say we will get a deal done.

“There is a responsibility for us to spend the fans’ money properly but Gravesen is keen, he likes Celtic and we will wait and see what happens. ”

Lawwell also moved to play down reports linking Stilian Petrov with a possible move to Aston Villa.

Petrov handed in a transfer request at the end of last season, but the club are determined to retain him.

Villa, now managed by former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill is believed to keen on signing the Bulgarian international possibly in exchange for striker Juan Pablo Angel.

“It is very simple – we do not want to sell him,” added Lawwell.

“As for Angel, that is somebody putting two and two together – there has been no discussion about that.

“I repeat, at this stage in the game, we do not want to sell Stilian.

“We want to hang on to him. We want him for the Champions League and we want to strengthen around him. That is where we are at.”
