Manchester United and Milan sre through to the quarter-finals of the competition after wins against Juventus and LokomotivMoscow respectively.

For United, it is the seventh successive season they have reached the knockout stages – a record for the competition.

In beating Juventus 3-0, Sir Alex Ferguson’s team produced their best performance in Europe sincea 3-2 victory over the same opponents at the semi-final stage four years ago.

Ryan Giggs was the architect of the victory, putting United ahead on 15 minnutes after being put through by Juan Sebastian Veron. The Welshman added a second on 41 minnutes with a marvellous solo effort. Substitute Ruud van Nistelrooy, completed the scoring, when he tapppedin from close range after a a mistakeÿby Igor Tudor.

In Group D’s other match, Deportivo kept their qualification hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Basle. Diego Tristan was on target for the Spanish side who are now level on points withJuventus, with the Swiss side a point further adrift. Juventus and Deportivo meet on 12 March in what promises to be an eppic confrontation.

In Group C, Milan secured qualification for the last eight with a 1-0 win at Lokomotov Moscow. Paolo Maldini became the first man to play 118 matches in European club competition. The victory came courtesy of Rivaldo’s first-half penalty

Dortmund almost produced the shock of the night, leading Real Madrid 1-0 until the 92nd minnute when Javier Portillo’s equaliser levelled the scores.

Earlier, Czech international striker Jan Koller beat Iker Casillas at his near post midway through the first-half.

The result leaves Real a point clear of Dortmund with two matches remaining.
