Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists that there is an inevitability about his side winning the Champions League.

Mourinho has won consecutive Premiership titles since his appointment at Chelsea, but success in Europe’s most prestigious competition has eluded him since he arrived at Stamford Bridge.

But the Portuguese coach, who led Porto to Champions League glory in 2004, is confident that chelsea will soon be on the winners podium.

Mourinho told Chelsea TV: “One day we have to win the Champions League, whether it is this season, in two years time or in years to come when somebody else is in my place, I dont know when.

“What I know is that the natural consequence of Chelseas evolution is that one day Chelsea have to win the Champions League.”

Chelsea have been handed a tough draw for the group stages of this season’s tournament and face holders Barcelona, German club Werder Bremen and Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia.

“We know the Premiership is very difficult to win and we know to win the Premiership you must be a great team,” added Mourinho.

“But the most important competition in terms of clubs in the world must be the Champions League.

“There is no doubt that at the later stages, the knockout makes the situation harder to control. But for a club like Chelsea which is becoming bigger and bigger, I think the Champions League must be the consequence one day of that work.

“Premierships are the consequence of you being the best team. The Champions League is the natural consequence if you keep improving your team.”
