Newcastle United midfielder Emre has been charged by the Football Association with “using racially-aggravated abusive and/or insulting words”.
The charge relates to an incident during the 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park on 30 December 2006.
Everton keeper Tim Howard and defenders Joleon Lescott and Joseph Yobo surrounded Emre after Newcastle had won a penalty.
The Turkey international has until January 29 to respond to the charge.
Emre’s agent Ahmet Bulut said: “I spoke with Emre and he said that he never said anything racist to the player.”
