England have confirmed they will not take up their ticket allocation for October’s Euro 2004 qualifier away to Turkey.
“This decision was reached after wideconsultation and with a view to the safety and security of all fans, Turkish and English,” the English Football Association confirmed.
The decision follows crowd trouble at the England-Turkey match in Sunderland on April 2.
The FA also appealed to England fans not to travel independently to the match.
“The FA cannot accept responsibility for English people who, despite advice, choose to travel to Turkey at this time,” it said.
“It calls on all relevant authorities, including the Home Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Police, UEFA, the Turkish FA and supporters’ groups, to back its decision and to work together to discourage fans from travelling.”
Last month, UEFA fined the English FA a record 150,000 Swiss francs for the misbehaviour of their fans at the match against Turkey.
