Sven Goran Eriksson wants Sir Alex Ferguson to play David Beckham in the centre of midfield for Manchester United.

The England coach is eager for his skipper gain some experience in the role at club level because he believes that the player will eventually graduate to the central position for the national side.

“I think those people who say Beckham should play inside in the midfield might be right.

“But it’s not up to me to test that, it is up to Alex Ferguson.

“My job is to select the players to have the job done and who can fit into the team as human beings and let them play at the position they already play in for their clubs.”

Unfortunately for Eriksson, central midfield is the one area in which Manchester United enjoy an embarrassment of riches. Ferguson is already trying to accomodate Roy Keane, Juan Sebastian Veron, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes in the central role and will not take too kindly to the suggestion that Beckham moves infield.

Furthermore, Ferguson wouldbe reluctant to move Beckham inside until he finds suitable replacement for him on the right flank.
