Rio Ferdinand is expected to put pen to paper on his £30 million switch to Manchester United within the next 24 hours.

After frantic negotiations over the weekend, Leeds United accepted a British record fee of £30million for the England defender and Ferdinand is expected to complete a medical and agree personal terms by the end of the day.

Ferdinand’s agent Pinhas Zahavi is confident the deal will go through without a hitch.

“Rio will be going to Manchester in the next 24 hours and we expect the deal to be completed very quickly now,” said Zahavi,, who is understood to have negotiated a five-year, £70,000 a week deal for his client.

“He is relieved that all this is over. It has been a big strain on him and he is happy that he can finally get on with his career.

“He is sad to be leaving Leeds and he wishes them well but this is a career move for him and he wants to join a bigger and better club.”

According to press reports,, Leeds will receive £15million immediately with the balance being paid in 12 month’s time. A further £4million will be paid tp the Yorkshire club dependent upon the performance of Manchester United over the next five years.
