Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed making a bid for Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

According to reports, the Manchester United boss has made a £22m bid for the 27-year-old, but Spurs are holding out for more.

“We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through,” Ferguson told The Sun.

“Berbatov has been impressive for a long time and he would be a great addition to our attack.”

Although Spurs have rejected United’s initial offer, Ferguson is confident the striker wants to move to Old Trafford and is happy bide his time.

“I think time will work for us more than against us,” Ferguson suggested.

“We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.”

Ferguson has also insisted any deal for Berbatov would not mean signal the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

“We will handle the situation in the best manner,” he added.

According to Portuguese television station RTP, Ferguson met Ronaldo in Lisbon on Monday in a bid to convince the player that his future lies at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, on crutches as he recovers from ankle surgery, has reiterated in the past seven days his desire to leave United for the Bernabeu.

“I know what I want and what I would like,” he said in a television interview. “We have to see what happens. I do not know where I will begin next season.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson is confident that Owen Hargreaves will be fit for the start of the season in August, despite the United midfielder suffering a recurrence of the tendinitis problem that hindered him in the early past of last season.

“It was apparent as soon as he came back to training,” said Ferguson.

“It is the same as last year. Some people get these things. Maybe training on the firm grounds brings it on or maybe it is just an inherent problem. We are trying to sort it out now with injections. That is what we did last November and it worked. Hopefully these work and by the time we come back from South Africa he should be OK.
