Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined œ4,600 by UEFA for claiming the quarter-final draw for the Champions League was fixed.

Ferguson was charged with bringing the game into disrepute after suggesting that UEFA had fixed the draw to try and reduce the chances of United reaching the final.

“Real Madrid – they have a nice draw, they must have picked it themselves,” Ferguson said after the draw.

“The Spanish or Italian teams don’t play each other, how do you think they work that out?”

“They don’t want us in the final, that’s for sure, but I’m not listening.”
