Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he is still interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Owen Hargreaves.

United tried to land the England international before the transfer window closed in August, but Bayern refused to sell.

Shortly afterwards, the England midfielder broke his left fibula against Arminia Bielefeld and has not played since.

“We’re still interested,” revealed Ferguson. “But there’s no update to give at the moment ad we haven’t spoken with Bayern again, but we are still interested. Michael has fitted in well, though. He is a fantastic passer of the ball and I think in Europe he will excel because it’s a competition where you don’t want to give the ball away. Good passing is vital when you are playing away from home.

“His vision and touch on the ball are absolutely superb and he has that ability to open up teams from deeper positions. He can create counter-attacking opportunities for us. Carrick’s performances have been good, but Scholes has been absolutely superb.

“Michael has had a cameo role in terms of the attention. All the focus has been on Paul — probably something he didn’t want. Maybe that’s been good for Michael, though, as it’s enabled him to settle at the club, take his time, and he’s produced some good football for us now.”
