FIFA executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have been banned from voting in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting ballot.

Adamu was banned from football activity for three years and Temarii for one year over claims they asked for money in exchange for World Cup votes.

Adamu was fined 10,000 Swiss francs and Temarii 5,000, while four other Fifa officials, all of whom are former executive committee members, were also suspended.

Ismael Bhamjee of Botswana was handed a four-year ban, Amadou Diakite of Mali and Ahongalu Fusimalohi of Tonga three-year punishments and Tunisia’s Slim Aloulou a two-year suspension. All four were fined 10,000 Swiss francs.

Adamu and Temarii were implicated in a Sunday Times investigation which accused them of accepting money in return for their vote in the bidding for the World Cup, with reporters from the newspaper posing as representatives of the United States’ 2022 World Cup bid.

Adamu has already indicated his intention to appeal against the verdict delivered today by the chairman of FIFA’s ethics committee Claudio Sulser.

“I am profoundly disappointed with the ethics committee’s findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now,” said Adamu.

“I am innocent of all the charges levelled against me by the ethics committee and I completely refute the decision they have made.

“As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the ethics committee’s decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal against it with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile, Qatar and Spain-Portugal were cleared of collusion.

England, Spain-Portugal, Russia and Netherlands-Belgium are in contention for 2018, while Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and the United States are bidding for 2022.

The ballot will proceed on 2 December with 22 voters – instead of 24 – and nine candidates across the two votes.
