Michel Platini, the president of FIFA’s Technical committee, has announced plans for a World Cup of Clubs to replace the current Confederations Cup.
The 2003 and 2005 Confederations Cup will still to go ahead but the tournament will be replaced by the World Cup of Clubs in 2007.
“The Confederations Cup will be replaced by a World Cup of Clubs, which to me seems more legitimate,’ said Platini.
“When I picture the international calendar, the Confederations Cup does not have a position of priority.
“The tournament could start in August, as preparation for the season, instead of playing five or six friendly games teams would begin the season with an interesting competition,” explained Platini.
The tournament would feature one or two teams from each continent and would be an extension of the Intercontinental Cup which is currently played mid-season.
