Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be out of action for two months after breaking a bone in his foot during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last night.

Gerrard was injured before half-time and X-rays confirmed he has broken the fifth metatarsal.

“Xabi Alonso passed the ball to me, I tried to turn and felt a crack,” he said after the match.

Gerrard miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan next month as well as vital domestic and European matches for Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: “There was no-one near him when it happened. He just jarred his foot.

“It is a blow because we have some big games in Europe coming up.

“But we have a big squad and we will have to cope without him.”
