Valencia’s Argentine international Kily Gonzalez has derided Michael Owen ahead of the Spanish Champions League clash with Liverpool on Tuesday, claimingit would be a ‘joke’ to describe the striker a world-class.

Discussing Owen’s performance for England against Argentina in last summer’s World Cup finals, Gonzalez admitted: “Owen hurt us that day but to say that he is world-class is a joke.”

“It is wrong to compare him to Gabriel Batistuta or Diego Maradona.”

The Argentinian also claimed that his country’s defeat in that World Cup match will inspire him in tonight’s Champions League opener against Liverpool.

“It is an honour to play the English but this game has extra meaning because I want to atone for Argentina’s defeat at the World Cup.
