Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has agreed an extension to his contract that will keep him at the clubfor at least the next two seasons.

Hitzfeld, whose previous deal ran until the end of next season, revealed that that he had signed for another term, taking his contract to June 2005.

The 54-year-old joined Bayern in 1998 and after suffering the disapppointment of losing the to Mannchester United in the 1999 Champions League final, presided over their success in the same competition the following year. Hitzfeld has also guided the club to three Bundesliga titles.

There was speculation earlier in the season that Hitzfeld may quit the club following Bayern’s failure to reach the second group stage of the Champions League. However, Bayern have since embarked upoon an impressive run in the Bundesliga and currently lie top, 14 points clear with only seven matches remaining.
