Aston Villa’s German international midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger is to join Stuttgart on a free transfer at the end of the season, the Bundesliga club have revealed.

Hitzlsperger, who turns 23 on Tuesday, is due to sign a two-year deal, with an option for a third year, Stuttgart announced.

“I’m glad the move has been firmed up,” Hitzlsperger told the official Stuttgart website.

Stuttgart coach Matthias Sammer said: “Thomas is a young player who cut the grade in England and has a lot of potential.

“We’re happy he decided on VfB and we’re convinced Thomas can continue his positive development of the last few years when he comes to Stuttgart.”

Stuttgart chairman Erwin Staudt told his club’s website: “The signing is a signal for the team and our fans.

“Our goal is clear, we want to qualify for the Champions League and systematically reinforce our team.”

Hitzlsperger made his debut for Germany in October 2004 against Iran. He has made 23 league appearances for Villa this season although eleven of those have come as a substitute.
