Bayer Leverkusen’s commercial manager Reiner Calmund has denied suggestions that new coach Thomas Hoerster is merely a carteaker appoinitment, claiming Hoerster is the best man for the job.

“Thomas Hoerster was always our preferred candidate for the case we could no longer continue with Klaus Toppmoeller,” Calmund told a news conference.

Hoerster replaced Toppmoeller on Sunday after defeat to Bochum saw Leverkusen slide into the releation zone. Previously, he had been in control of the club’s under-21 team.

“He (Hoerster) is extremely competent and really tough,” Calmund added.

Calmund did concende that the club were seeking a high-profile sports director to work with him.

Leverkusen are currently third bottom in the Bundesliga.
