Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas could be out for a month after picking up an Achilles injury in training last week.
Jenas, who recently made his international debut in England’s friendly againt Australia, broke downwith a pain in his heel ahead of Newcastle’s match with Leeds United.
The injury is a major setback to Newcastle boss Bobby Robson, who is already without suspended striking duo Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
“JJ felt a sharp pain on his heel while doing shooting practice,’ said Robson.
“He was nowhere near being able to play at Elland Road and if he’s torn his Achilles it will mean four weeks out.”
Despite losing the opening two matches in their second phase Champions League group, Newcastle gave themselves a glimmer of a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages when they beat Leverkusen 3-1 in the BayArena last Tuesday.
