Liverpool have distanced themselves from reports that co-owner Tom Hicks is considering selling his stake in the club.

Sources close to the American millionaire say he was informed several days ago of speculation growing about a rift with co-owner George Gillett and suggestions that he was looking to sell his share. It is believed that Hicks was angered by the suggestions and told officials at Anfield that there was no substsnace to the claims.

The club’s chief executive Rick Parry said: “I have seen the story, and as far as I am aware it is complete rubbish.”

Hicks and Gillett are believed to be close to securing finances to build their new £400 million stadium in Stanley Park.
