Besiktas coach Mircea Lucescu has resigned , the Turkish club have confirmed.
Besiktas finished third and 14 points behind Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce despite leading the league by nine points at one stage.
“Mircea Lucescu, who served Besiktas for two seasons, sent a letter of resignation to our club,” Besiktas said in a statement on its website.
Lucescu, a former coach of the Romanian national team, led Besiktas to the championship in 2003, as well as guiding the club to the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup in 2003.
