French champions Lyon are planning to sue FIFA over an injury sustained by defender Eric Abidal last month, the sports daily L’Equipe has reported.

Abidal fractured his left foot during France’s 3-2 victory over Costa Rica in a friendly international played in Martinique in November.

“Olympique Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is to hold a press conference on Wednesday to announce that the club will take FIFA to a French court,” L’Equipe said.

According to the report Lyon blamed FIFA for forcing clubs to release their players without compensation when they were selected for international duty.

Abidal is expected to be out of action until February.
