Deportivo striker Roy Makaay could have sparked a summer transfer scramble after telling his club he will not sign a new contract.
Dutchman Makaay, 27, has two years remaining on his contract with the Spanish front runners but wants to move on when the deal expires.
“I will not be renewing my contract at Deportivo andI have informed the club of my decision,” said Makaay.
“I have spent four years at Deportivo and I am happy here, but in June 2005 I will say goodbye.”
His bombshell means that Deportivo will be likely to want to offload him in the summer when they can get a good fee rather than letting him leave for nothing.
Makaay is currently leading the race for the European Golden Boot for number of league goals scored in a season with 24 goals ahead of Southampton’s James Beattie.
The Dutchman has already spoken of a desire to play a part of his career in England, and clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United may keep tabs on him in the near future.
