Birmingham manager Alex McLeish has rubbished reports linking him with a move for Peter Lovenkrands.

Reports suggested McLeish was lining up a move to be reunited with the former Rangers winger.

Lovenkrands’ future at Schalke is up in the air as the Danish international has dropped down the pecking order at the Bundesliga outfit.

McLeish insists he will not be making any move for the Schalke winger, but he did admit he was tracking Lorient defender Michael Ciani.

“Peter Lovenkrands? That is pie in the sky,” said McLeish.

“Michael Ciani? I’ve looked at him, we will take another look but I don’t see me doing anything before the transfer window closes on that one.”

McLeish has also not given up hope of signing Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill even though Bolton have agreed a fee for the England Under-21 international.

“We are still working on a couple of things. We will have to wait and see,” added McLeish.

“Cahill is a player we admire and would like to take him here as well. We will just have to wait and see what happens over the next 48 hours.

“We have ruled ourselves in on anything that is happening. I am not sure where it is at the moment. We are in touch with the agent and Martin O’Neill.”
