Middlesbrough have rejected a bid from Tottenham Hotspur for Stewart Downing.

The 20-year-old winger enjoyed n impressive season last term, culminating in him breaking into the full England squad.

Downing still has three years to run on his contract and Middlesbrough are looking to extend the current deal.

“We have had an approach from Tottenham regarding Stewart Downing,” said Boro chief Keith Lamb.

“They did make an unsolicited offer, we rejected the offer immediately and told Tottenham that Stewart is not for sale, that we are not interested and that they should not pursue the matter any further.”

“They’ve since told us they will not do so.”
