Chievo held Milan to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro in the Italian Cup quarter-final match last night with a solid performance.

The fans could be forgiven for thinking the home team were not taking the competition seriously, as the first leg of the tie saw Milan coach Ancelotti rest several first team players, including Rivaldo and Shevchenko. But their line-up was still impressive, with proven international players such as Inzaghi, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Leonardo on show.

Yet it was Chievo who came closest to scoring in the first half. Nicola Lazetic, the Yugoslav midfielder on a year’s loan from Como, hit the post with a long-range effort.

In the second half Milan brought on Rui Costa and Serginho to try and win the game. Danish marksmanTomasson, unable to command a regular place in the side, glanced Costacurta’s cross just wide with his head. It proved to be Milan’s best chance.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced; Chievo will have the home advantage in the second leg but were unableto capture an important away goal.
