Michael Owen will undergo a full medical with Manchester United on Friday morning before completing his move to Old Trafford, according to reports.

The 29-year-old, who is out of contract at Newcastle, did not return for pre-season training after his deal with the Magpies ran out in June.

Owen has been linked with Everton, Aston Villa, Stoke and Hull but appears set to sign for the Old Trafford club.

Despite being a free signing, the move would represent a gamble for Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson given Owen’s injury problems in recent years. Owen made 79 appearances for Newcastle and scored 30 goals in four seasons at St James’ Park.

Reports suggest the 29-year-old successfully underwent an initial assessment on his injury-prone knee on Thursday and is now set to travel to Manchester to undergo an full medical.

United have yet to officially comment on the story, but it is expected that Owen will join before the weekend.

Ferguson is keen for attacking reinforcements after losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer and Owen’s proven goalscoring record is thought to be viewed as a solution.

Owen, whose fitness and commitment to the game have been questioned, is clearly intent on showing that he can still play at the highest level.

“I’ve got skin thicker than 99.9% of the population and I have got used to it,” he said last week. “I’ll come back. I’ll play well and score goals once more.”
