Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has admmitted he is eager for for David Beckham to stay at the Bernabeu.

The 31-year-old former England skipper, whose current deal expires next year, has been in talks over a two-year extension.

“He is a genius on and off the pitch and he is a wonderful person in every sense,” Calderon told Real’s website.

“He is one of the most charitable and lovely people I’ve met. I’d love him to stay because he’s a great player.”

Unless he signs a new deal, Beckham will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January.

Calderon insists manager Fabio Capello wants to retain midfielder even though he has dropped Beckham for the last three Liga matches.

“Capello has confidence in him,” he added.

“He has been a starter in some games and now he is enjoying some minutes but he cannot play in every game.”
