Real Madrid president Fernando Martin has praised Zinedine Zidane’s contribution to the sport after the Frenchman announced his decision to retire at the end of the season.
“He is and always will be an example for everyone who loves sport, for his commitment, honesty and talent,” Martin told the Real Madrid website.
“It is a shame a player of his standing is leaving the world of football,” he added after Zidane said on Tuesday that he would retire following the World Cup.
“His gesture shows what an honourable person he is. I know he wants to stay linked with the club and we’ll do everything we can to make this possible,” Martin added.
“The best thing we can do for him now is to secure second place in the league.
“He deserves the best send off possible and I am sure the fans will fill the Bernabeu to see his last home game against Villarreal. It will be a true Madrid party dedicated to him.”
Zidane is suspended for Sunday’s match at Osasuna and has one home game left in a Real shirt on the weekend of May 6/7.
