The transfer of Real Madrid striker Ronaldo to Milan appeared to be in jeopardy, after Real coach Fabio Capello insisted the Brazilian striker was still an important member of his side.

Milan have offered Real Madrid €22m for Ronaldo, according to the Spanish daily newspaper Marca. The bid is said to be €3m less than Real’s asking price for the three-time world player of the year.

Capello, speaking after after Wednesday’s 2-1 friendly win over Belgian side Anderlecht, said that Ronaldo still had a part to play at Real.

“For us, Ronaldo is an important player,” said Capello.

Capello had claimed on Tuesday that Ronaldo would not be leaving despite continued press speculation in Spain and Italy that he will be swapped for Milan’s Kaka.

Madrid’s president Ramón Calderón told the Spanish television channel Cuatro he wanted to speak to Ronaldo before deciding whether to sell the player.

“This won’t be resolved tonight,” Calderón said.

“The first thing is find out what the player thinks. In principle, he would like to stay.”

Milan officials flew to Madrid on Wednesday to open negotiations with Calderon.

Rossoneri vice-president Adriano Galliani admitted a deal was not yet imminent.

“Is Ronaldo really close? No it isn’t so,” Galliani told Sky Italia.

“He’s a Real Madrid player. Now we will meet the Spanish side officials and we will see what happens.

“We don’t want to be rude to Real. We will see what they tell us.”
