Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has virtually ruledout the possibility of the Bundesliga club defeating Reall Madrid in the knock out round of the Champions League.
“When we saw the draw we thought that this was the toughest game we could have been given,” Rummenigge told Spanish sports daily Marca .
“For Bayern to make it through to the quarter-finals, Real Madrid will have to have two very bad days and we will have to play two really good games.
“I know that our players are going to be motivated by the very fact that they will be playing Real Madrid, but even if we perform to 100 percent of our ability I’m not sure we can knock them out.”
Rummenigge cited Bayern’s Bundesliga record this season – where they trail leaders Werder Bremen by 9 points – as evidence of their poor current form.
“Bayern are playing badly,” he said.
“Our position in the Bundesliga says it all – we aren’t in good shape. All we can hope for against Real is that Bayern start playing like a team, and that isn’t happening at the moment.”
Bayern host Real in the first leg in Munich on February 24th and with the return leg in Spain on March 10th.
