Wolves are now favourites to be relegated from the Premiership after slumping to a 3-0 defeat at Blackburn

Wesley Sneijder has admitted that he is disappointed to have not been shortlisted for the prestigious FIFA Ballon d’Or award.

The Dutch playmaker was a key figure in Inter’s treble-winning season under Jose Mourinho, where they lifted the Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League trophies.

Sneijder also played a big part in guiding Holland to the World Cup final, where they were eventually beaten 1-0 in extra-time by Spain.

However, this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist compirses Barcelona trio Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

“I give my congratulations to Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, even if I’m sorry,” he told Telegraaf.

“But there is nothing I can do. Everyone wants to me to say something, but there is nothing I could say.

“I’m tired but I want to win the World Club Cup to close this fantastic year positively.”

Nerazzurri president Massimo Moratti, however, branded the decision to omit Sneijder as an unjustified one.

“I find it very unfair,” he told the club’s official website.

“Sneijder had a phenomenal year, won everything he could have won. For me he deserved the Ballon d’Or.

“It seems unfair the award is to be given to someone who, although a great player, didn’t have the same level of performance throughout the year.”
