South American football federations will vote for Uefa’s Gianni Infantino for the Fifa presidency, while Asia will throw its support behind Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.
CONMEBOL president Juan Angel Napout said the group would vote “as a bloc” for Infantino in next February’s election.
“We have spoken with Gianni to set out what is needed,” he said.
Infantino has said he will stand aside if his boss Uefa president Michel Platini is allowed to stand.
Platini is currently suspended by Fifa, alongside current president Sepp Blatter, while an investigation into alleged corruption at the world body is conducted by Swiss prosecutors. Lawyers for the suspended Uefa chief say he is facing a life ban from football.
Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation said its 24-member executive committee unanimously backed Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family.
“The members of the AFC executive committee passed a resolution urging all member associations to unite behind and support the AFC president Sheikh Salman in his efforts to be elected as the first FIFA president from Asia,” the AFC said.
“It is a big support for my campaign, as well as an honour for me, to have the endorsement and full backing of the AFC executive committee,” Sheikh Salman said in the AFC statement. “It also sends a strong message that Asia is behind one candidate.”
The other candidates are former Fifa vice president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan, former Fifa official Jerome Champagne of France and South African businessman and former minister Tokyo Sexwale.
The election to find a successor to Blatter will take place on February 26, next year.
