Giovanni Trapattoni has been appointed coach of Benfica.
Trapattoni was replaced at Italy’s coach nine days ago by former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi.
The veteran coach took over the Italian national team in 2000 after a hugely successful club career that included 20 titles and cups during stints at Juventus, Internazionale of Milan and Bayern Munich.
Benfica lost previous coach Jose Antonio Camacho at the end of the season when the former manager of the Spanish national team return to his homeland to take charge of Real Madrid.
Benfica but finished second in the Portuguese League behind FC Porto.
