Holland coach Marco van Basten is keen to postpone the moment he has to name his final squad for the World Cup finals in Germany.
Van Basten said that he still hopes FIFA will change the May 15 deadline in order for him to be able to spend more time with his players before naming his final selection.
“The problem is that I can only see my players at their club and can’t work with them myself,” said Van Basten.
“I have to name 23 players on May 15, while our build up starts on May 22.
“I believe you can make your final choice if you have worked for a week or 10 days with each other.
“I would prefer it if I could leave my choice until one day before the tournament starts, though I understand that will be tough for the organisers,” he said.
Van Basten also expressed his concern about the situation with Liverpool defender Jan Kromkamp, who made his Holland debut last season and became a regular as right wing back.
However, Kromkamp left AZ Alkmaar to join Villarreal last summer but after a disappointing first half of the season he joined Liverpool during the January transfer window.
“It is annoying that Kromkamp, who is a good player, made the wrong choices for his career,” Van Basten said.
“It is sad when someone throws away his own chances and also doesn’t help us.
“It seems to us that Jan is more busy with peripheral events.”
“Jan has to make choices. I have no influence on that, but if he wanted my advice, that was possible,” added Van Basten.
Kromkamp has made only two starts for Liverpool in the Premier League and FA Cup since his move to Anfield.
