Louis van Gaal’s position as Barcelona coach grewincreasingly untenable after his side went down toa 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo.
It was Barcelona’s 8th league defeat of the season and for Van Gaal, possibly his final match in charge with the club promising to assess his situation on Monday.
“We have to take things calmly,” club vice-president Francesc Closa told reporters after the game.
“If a decision is to be taken it will be taken on Monday after a logical analysis of the situation.
“We’re not going to do anything hastily, in the heat of the moment.”
The loss to Celta Vigo comes on the back of a 4-2 home defeat to ten man Valencia during which the side were jeered off the pitch by their own fans.
Barcelona now lie 12th place in the Spanish first division, 20 points behind leaders Real Sociedad and just three points ahead of the relegation places. The prospect of a Champions League place looks remote and for Dutchman Van Gaal, in his second spell at the Nou Camp, Sunday’s defeat may well be the final straw.
