Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger does not expect striker Robin van Persie to play again season.

The 23-year-old injured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot after scoring the equaliser in the 2-1 win over Manchester United in January.

The Dutch international was initially hopeful of returning before the end of the current campaign.

“It is likely he will be out for the season,” Wenger told Arsenal TV.

“The end of April now looks optimistic.

“We have spoken to the doctors and they told us that the longer you keep this kind of fracture without playing the less chance you have of a recurrence.

“If he can play only one or two games then we will not take a gamble.”
