Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defender under-fire striker Thierry Henry and suggested that the France’s problems lie not with the striker but with the way the team has been playing.

France have taken just two points from their opening games against outsiders Switzerland and South Korea, and Henry has been criticised for his performances.

But Wenger feels the system coach Raymond Domenech has employed is responsible for the team’s below-par performances.

“I feel sorry for Thierry because he was left isolated as a lone striker and did not get enough support,” said Wenger.

“Thierry can play that role and has done it to good effect, but if the team is not playing well and you do not get service it is impossible.

“I still believe France will go through by beating Togo but they must find the right team and formation quickly.

“They look like a team which needs confidence and to believe in themselves because they have the quality.”

France have flopped at the last two major tournaments and Wenger believes Henry is determined to make amends.

“I know Thierry was very upset by what happened in 2004,” he continued.

“In fact, he thought about finishing with France after that, but that is in the past now and he is focused on winning this World Cup.
