Rumours abound that Clive Woodward, who today stepped down as England rugby coach, could be set for a sensational switch to football, with Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe admitting that the World Cup-winning coach could join the Premiership club.
Woodward resigned his post in the wake of a row with his bosses and his departure could pave the way for a shock move into the world of football.
“Sir Clive expressed an interest in getting into football and has looked at our academy and other aspects of the club,” Lowe told The Times newspaper.
“If we can learn from him about motivation, improving individuals and becoming world-class, then great. And if we can help him then we are very happy, too’ He added.
Rumours of Woodward’s potential involvement were fuelled after he was spotted with Lowe at Southampton’s Premiership match against Chelsea last Saturday.
This could pave the way for a highly unusual switch, with Lowe refusing to rule out a move for the England coach.
“He’s running the England rugby team for the next 12 months, as I am aware, but I will be discussing his involvement at the board meeting on Thursday.”
“Relationships sometimes are not planned – they just grow” The Southampton Chief added.
