Close!

Germany 0-0 Poland

Poland’s Kamil Grosicki turns his marker just outside the area and curls in a wonderful ball across the face of goal and it appears to hit the unmarked Arkadiusz Milik’s in the face. The ball is flicked inches wide but would have been a certain goal had Milik had made any kind of decent contact. Best chance of a poor game.

England fans Lille Euro 2016

The familiar sight of belligerent England fans confronting the police.

Three more games today, kicking off with England v Wales in Lens, followed bu Ukraine-Northern Ireland in Lyon and the day’s action concludes when Germany face Poland at the Stade France.

Inevitably, given the skirmishes that took place in Lille last night, the focus ahead of the opening match will be the conduct of the supports. With the threat of expulsion hanging over England in the event of further trouble involving their fans, appeals for calm have been issued by the coach, Roy Hodgson, the captain, Wayne Rooney and also by the English FA.

FA’s chief executive, Martin Glenn, has written to fans to tell them not to react to provocation”

“We recognise that some of you were subjected to acts of violence from rival supporters in the stadium last weekend. It is something we take very seriously and while tens of thousands of you acted impeccably, there was a minority that did not.

“Like the England team, you represent the badge and I urge you to act in a positive and respectful way.”

Elsewhere Romania and Switzerland ground out an uninspiring 1-1 draw in Paris, while in Lille, a Marek-Hamsik-inspired Slovakia defeated Russia 2-1 to improve their own chances of reaching the last 16.
