Halfon jailed for drug smuggling

Former Israel international defender Felix Halfon has been jailed for 4-1/2 years after pleading guilty of a drugs trafficking offences.

Halfon, 31, and an accomplice, Uri Avital, were arrested in August after Avital was caught at Ben-Gurion Airport with five kgs of cocaine which he had imported from Venezuela.

The court heard that Halfon financed the deal.

Avital received a 4-1/2 year sentence.

“I admit the offence. I regret my actions and am certain that this will not be an easy period. It is hard for me to accept the punishment but I hope to gain strength,” Halfon told the court.

Halfon made the last of his 38 appearances for Israel in 1999.

This season he was on the books of Premier League side Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv.
