Chelsea have reportedly fined Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen £60,000 while he waits to find out if he will be charged with drink driving.

Jose Mourinho, a strict disciplinarian, has taken no further action after Gudjohnsen breached the club’s 2am curfew. The striker was stopped by police at 5am while driving erratically. He was breathalysed on the spot and bailed on suspicion of drink driving.

Mourinho has already demonstrated his ruthless streak this season by sacking Romanian striker Adrian Mutu for persistent misconduct culminating in a positive drugs test, but has been more tolerant of Gudjohnsen.

Despite staying out into the early hours the Iceland international insists he drank just two glasses of wine all night and is confident of escaping a charge when his B-test is returned next month.
