Turkey striker Hakan Sukur has denied reports he has retired from international football after being left out of the squad for the last World Cup qualifiers.

It had been reported that Hakan was set to announce his retirement but he said this was not true in a statement on his club Galatasaray’s website.

“In my disappointment at not being called up for the matches against Denmark and Kazakhstan I had some thoughts. But I didn’t say to anyone that I was leaving the national side,” he said.

“The enthusiasm that I felt for the national side when I first joined it continues in the same way. If I make a decision like this I will make sure that the sporting public hears it from me first.”
